At Sea

Bananas are bad luck on boats

Women are bad luck at sea

Suitcases are not taken aboard fishing vessels

Whistling on deck is discouraged as you might whistle up a storm. Whistling when the weather is dead calm & you need a wind is a different matter, but be careful what you wish for. Whistling below decks, or on the docks doesn't matter.

The luckiest day of the year to set out to sea is Eldus 30th, Sea Day. A ship's maiden voyage ideally starts on this date. The worst day for sailing is the 1st of Malclypse, as this day is as far away from Sea Day as the calendar allows.

Turning over a hatch will cause the hold to fill with seawater. (Actually, this one is more good sense than superstition, but aren't they all?)

Never say the word 'drowned' while at sea.

Sharks following a ship with their dorsal fins cresting are harbingers of death. Sharks swimming in front of a ship while cresting is an omen of shipwreck with all hands lost. It's best to stop the ship until the sharks leave, then change course.

Speaking to a redhead before setting sail is bad luck. In the Heldannic Confederation, conversely, a redhead is the only person who can wish someone luck on a voyage without losing their own.
